I Propose a New Educational Approach…
I propose a new educational approach: self-directed, interest-based learning with MINIMAL interference.
By minimal interference I mean that the student does NOT have teachers. They have mentors and facilitators.
The key ingredient to this model is trust. Trust from the adult that an Autistic student can and will educate themselves. All they have to do is follow their interests.
A teacher is redundant when the Autistic person has within them their own rapacious, insatiable appetite for learning.
Learning becomes impossible, traumatic and pointless when the adult involved interferes too much.
Continuously wrenching the Autistic student from their flow states by forcibly diverting them away from their interests and unilaterally imposing upon them a procession of topics irrelevant to their interests does not amount to an education.
Mainstream schooling is futile on the basis the Autistic student will not learn a thing, and it is abuse on the basis that the student will be traumatised (long before the final failed attempts are made).
